Yahoo groups being shut down

Yahoo groups being shut down

2019-10-18 by <backshall1@...>

Mike, with Yahoo groups going away real soon, a lot of other groups are proposing to move to Groups.io. Unfortunately, without migration tools from Yahoo Groups and a 1GB total files and messages limit, the free version just doesn't cut it. There is some talk of combining Monopoly and Polysix groups under one paid subscription ($110 per year) with separate subgroups. They say subgroups work well on Groups.io. Kogpolyex is a fairly active group with over 1300 members and we could cover the cost of the paid plan (10G limit, with migration tools) for less than a dollar each per year, or maybe combine with the other groups and form a new subgroup? One way or another, we need to save the archives and keep this group going! Any other ideas come to mind? Another possibility is a paid plan for one year so the migration tools are available, then revert to the free version if the 1GB data limit is sufficient.

And somewhere between the buyout and bankruptcy will be constant fee increases.

And features and ads that nobody wants. The list goes on.
I just need to figure out how to let new users post and the new forum
should be good to go very soon.

Re: [korgpolyex] Yahoo groups being shut down

2019-10-20 by support

I would be happy to host the Monopoly and Polysix groups on my forum.
If you want to float that idea to them, go right ahead. I would only
need a moderator for each forum.
On our yahoo group, there is very little in the files section that I
don't already have. So there is almost nothing to lose there. Some of
the photos are worth keeping. If I have enough time, I will download
them ready for reposting later on our new forum.
Since Verizon has not provided a way to export the messages, there is
very little we can do but say good bye to 20 years of information. I
can't say that I am worried about it because our new forum will answer
questions when they come up anyway.
I have not yet added a 'korgpolyex' forum on my site. But if enough
people say 'go' then I will go ahead and do that. And I think the last
message that gets posted onto the yahoo group needs to point newbies at
the new forum. So assuming that no one else steps in and creates
something else somewhere, I'll post a link to our new forum.
Anyone that wants to test the new forum at
https://www.hawk800.com/forums/, please go ahead and test out the
functionality. I want it to be as smooth and painless as possible. But
I need to know what works and what doesn't in order to do that.
Cheers,

Re: [korgpolyex] Yahoo groups being shut down

2019-10-20 by <backshall1@...>

A GoFundMe page already has enough money for the first year of the VintageKorg group on groups.io, with Polysix being the first subgroup. I believe the owner of Monopoly intends to be the next subgroup. I guess we are just waiting to see what the storage usage looks like after the migration is done. I have no idea if it is over the 1G limit of the free version or even close. Of course, the limits apply to VintageKorg overall, so it has to be split among subgroups if we went back to the free version. I don’t think it will be a problem keeping the paid subscription with the 10GB limit if the cost averages out to well less than a dollar per person per year. One guy kicked in 50 euros. Adding a subgroup for Poly800 would be one way to save the message archives.

Well I am more than happy to pass this over to someone else that wants
to look after it. And I will happily post a final message and also give
anyone that needs moderator access that too.
Just say the word. PS: I just created a korgpolyex forum on my site.
But I can disable if you like.

Also you mention "we need to save the archives" but I don't see any way of doing that. How is that done?

It sounds like Groups.io has a migration tool for messages as well as files and photos.

Not sure how far along Ben is with the Polysix migration. As you can imagine, both Yahoo and Groups.io servers are very busy with a massive number of migrations. Messaging is up and working fine on the new group, but only 11 of 825 members have joined so far. Adding a PolyEx800 subgroup would only be a good idea if people wanted all of the old emails. I think PolyEx800 would make more sense than KorgPolyEx as a name in this context as a subgroup. Do people really search those old topics, or just ask again? It wouldn’t bother me to just use your new forum and leave the baggage behind.

I don't mind the discussion content going away.

Re: [korgpolyex] Re: Yahoo groups being shut down

2019-10-21 by yahoo@...

I'm here now. :-)

Polysix migration is under way as we speak. MonoPoly will be next. It would be great if this group joins in. All message history (except attachments, but we can put those in a file section), files, photos, databases, etc can be migrated.

We are thinking of merging the MonoPoly and PolySix (and other Vintage Korg) groups into one big one. There is so much in common, both in subject matter and in subscribers. Same for this group perhaps? Separate subgroups are still a possibility, for example a 'hawkmod' group or a 'for sale' group, which are more limited in scope.

Hi Ben,
I am guessing that you don’t see any problem with migrating multiple Yahoo groups into different subgroups with one main group $110 subscription, right? I sent a message out to korgms2000 but no response there yet.

Correct, the $110 fee covers one main group and as far as I can tell no (unreasonable) limit on migrations into this group or its subgroups. I’m still playing around with the layout, groups / subgroups setup. (For those who are curious, have a look at https://vintagekorg.groups.io/g/Main <https://vintagekorg.groups.io/g/Main>)

BTW, I appreciate you reaching out to other Korg groups! I hope we can continue this knowledge- and subscription base.

The PolySix and Mono/Poly lists have been transferred to our new home on groups.io. Is there still interest to transfer this group too?

Re: [korgpolyex] Re: Yahoo groups being shut down

Ben,
I would definitely like to see the files transferred. It looks like you have given up on the idea of subgroups in VintageKorg, maybe too many if there is one for every instrument? With one Files section, the files should go in one Poly800 folder, not just dumped in the middle of all the Polysix files, and the Polysix files should all go in a Polysix folder. We need some better organization of all this old stuff. Of course, actually getting it moved is first priority. I don’t know how easy it is to create new folders and move things around on groups.io after it’s transferred, though.
For mail lists, are you really talking about only one VintageKorg mail list for everything?

  Hello,

The PolySix and Mono/Poly lists have been transferred to our new home on groups.io. Is there still interest to transfer this group too?

Sorry Don, Michael, I missed your replies somehow.

Yes, the idea is to merge the mailing lists. Florian and I discussed the idea of having a separate PolySix and MonoPoly group but decided in the end to merge them. There is little traffic on the lists, and there is overlap both in interests / subjects and subscribers. I assume this is the same for the Poly800/EX800 list.

About having subfolders for files per model: that is possible. Sounds like a good idea. I can move those after the fact into the correct place. As far as I can tell, this is not possible for photos (yet?).

So just say the word and we can start the migration. The only requirement is that there is somebody here who can assign moderator rights to a new account from groups.io. Please get in touch with me off-list (yahoo@stuyts.nl) if you want to go ahead.

Ben

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
