Hi Dan, You can join the OT list by sending a mail to logic-ot-subscribe@yahoogroups.com I'm cutting in some answers among your questions below and sending it to the OT list where it truly belongs. See you there :) ciao per -------------------------------------------- BOYSEN MUSIK MEDIA INTERNET Url: http://www.boysen.se Mail: per@... Yes. >where does the AKAI hold all the > information.....memory, hd?? RAM memory - yes. Floppies, HD, zip drive, CDrom etc is for sample library. Personally I haven't touched my AKAI since I got the EXS24. >if you have more than 32 instruments > where can > you store them so the akai can load them up at any time. Floppies, HD, zip drive, CDrom etc >If it can play 32 > banks at 1 time....do all these come out of 1 output of the > sampler and thus > into 1 channel on the mixer? Yes. But different AKAI models have more or less outputs. You direct sounds/programs from inside the AKAI to prefered hardware output. >what if you want more control over each > instruments....does this mean that some AKAI's would have 32 > stereo outputs? Don't know. Check out AKAIs web page for the most advanced modules. > if so, you'd have to have a massive mixer to input them all into right?!?! Damn right! > and if you have a big studio how would that all work? is there a > way perhaps > to double instruments up on the same mixer channel..... Yes. The more expensive the studio rent, the more you double.. :) >I always thought it > was better to give each instrument its own channel..... Yes, if possible, that is. >but of > course if each > sound module/sampler etc has 32 multi-timbral parts this wouldn't be > possible.... DAmn right again! :) >but what I don't get is if you have say a Roland Sound Module > plugged into a channel on your mixer, and you had a piano and bass sound > coming out of it you'd obvisoly want to apply different EQ to each...but > thats not possible if they both come in on the same channel??? No it isn't. So that's not a good idea. > I understand > i'm missing the boat here somewhere......but I get lost not in how all the > eqiupment works but how its linked together! > another thing is with FX, I suppose that is what the busses are > for? Yes, but not only for that. You also use busses to group tracks/instruments together as sub mixes. You may set up a sub mix for "drum kit" and another one for "backing vocals" etc... - Direct tracks to sub mix busses - Send from tracks to effect busses >You've > got a rack of say 10 outboard FX, compressors, filters, exciters, delays > etc, etc ,etc.....would you need 10 busses inputs to plug each one > into..... Yes. But among the fx you mention there are both effects that you should send to from tracks and effects that you have to direct the tracks to. > then say you wanted to use the delay twice, how would > you do that, (1) Send from the two tracks that need delay to the buss where you have inserted the delay. (2) Record the track to tape (or bounce to disc) with the delay applyed. Then do the same thing with the other track and you have "used the delay twice". > could you assign it to do a different effect for each track you wanted to > use it on? No. Not without reprogramming/changing patch in the effect device - but this would only work if only one track is using it at a time. > I'm used to being able to insert a fx on each channel like in > Logic Normally not a good idea. Usually it sounds better to send from the track to a buss where you insert the effect. > ...but obvisoly this isn't how it works in a studio set up!! Both ways, actually. As in Logic. Depends on which sound you want - the sound of the track through the effect (inserted directly on the track) or the sound of the track with a little effect added (send to fx buss) > - Dan >
