24bit gives you a theoretical 144dB dynamic range, as opposed to 16bit's 
96dB range. The digital 0dB (full level) will remain the same), you'll 
just have better resolution in the low levels.

To do a simple test, just a nice and clean loud signal, take it's level 
down 60dB, take it down another 60dB, then maximize it. Then you'll 
clearly hear what low-bit resolution does to your signal. Not really a 
scientific test, but a simple and effective way to understand what's 
happening... even if you don't have high-quality monitoring.
