[LUG] OT: Chord symbols

1999-11-18 by Bart Rademakers

Johannes Prischl" <jprischl@...> quoted a message I didn't see in the
LUG:

> > I wanted to insert chord symbols for guitar / keyboard for Star Wars but
> > was unable to type onto the stav ( or could not find an easy way
> 'Rhythmically'
> > e.g. C/// G7/// Fsus/// etc

Johannes' answer was excellent - as usual.

But the original question [chord symbols onto the stav] somehow provoked an
old grieve:
Playing my way through studio- and concert sessions, every now and then I
have to struggle with charts from arrangers/copyists who write their chord
symbols IN the staff instead of ABOVE it.
This may seem futile, but it's quite ridiculous to use the visual/musical
efficiency of chord symbols, and then make them unreadable by causing 5
crosslines on them!
Notes fit in staves within a specific and mostly efficient graphic design;
CHORD SYMBOLS DO NOT! For highest visibility (absolutely necessary for
read-and-play speed) arrangers/copyists should place them where they belong:
in WHITE SPACE, ABOVE the staff.
