Win2k can act oddly if ACPI is disabled after setup. Better to disable it
while installing, press F5 when Win2k setup is asking for SCSI controllers,
and keep it pressed until it asks for a computer type. Then, select standard
computer.

Under certain conditions, you can disable PCI steering under Win98. I am not
sure if this is as useful as disabling ACPI under Win2k.
