OT - Alesis ADAT

2002-03-12 by efiebke

I've been using the ADAT for my happy little recording projects for
years. Finally had to put my original "black face" ADAT to rest and
purchased the XT20 about 1 1/5 years ago. Currently have a
dependable system utilizing the LAWP (4.61) and the ADAT. I'm a
happy person!

Sadly, it seems like the ADAT is becoming obsolete. Three fairly
major on-line music stores don't even promote the ADAT on their web
sites!! My concern is product support of the ADAT. This includes
maintanence, ADAT tapes, and even software/hardware support with
various products like the LAWP program, MOTU 2408, MOTU Midi
Timepiece (all of which I own), etc. I've already begun stock-piling
ADAT tapes just in case they are no longer produced a two or three
years from now (or they may become difficult to acquire, or too
expensive).

Currently, the only time I do use the ADAT is to exchange tapes with
two guitarist-friends of mine who both own ADAT machines. It is so
convenient to have them record the guitar tracks in their own home
studios, exchange tapes and then transfer the tracks into my computer
to be mixed by the LAWP program.

Is there anyone out there who still uses the ADAT? Anyone out there
who may know where Alesis is going with regards to product support
for the ADAT? Are they even making the machines anymore?!?

One final set of questions. Is there anyone out there who uses the
new LAWP (LAMP) version 5 program with their ADAT? If so, how's the
syncronization???

To be honest, I'm a little sad that the ADAT seems to be growing out
of favor. It's been a dependable product which met my recording
needs in a wonderful way. Don't get me wrong. I love my relatively
new computer-based recording set-up!!! I'm going to hang on to the
XT20 for as long as I can before it totally wears down. It will be a
sad day when I finally put the XT20 out to rest. When that day does
come, I guess I'll just have to finally purchase a dedicated HD
recorder machine. Oh darn. . . :)

Happy music making and recording to all!!
