Interesting - I've never really thought of this approach to mastering.

I once tried something similar for distortion: simply recording the 
tracks to a cassette deck with the input gain set "too" high, then re-
recording it on a new track and mixing it with the original. The 
result was a distortion I had never heard alike before - quite hissy 
and annoying, which could be useful in some places. One thing to look 
out for when doing this is the unstability of cassette decks - I had 
to do some timestretching afterwards to make up for speed drifting. 
This, of course, also introducing some weirdness..
