I think there is another point to be made about 24 bit. Its not that you can 
hear such a huge difference - its that when you record 16 bit, you have to 
get the levels just right, and compress a lot - to avoid overages but keep 
the signal as hot as possible. However, with 24 bit, you have a lot more 
freedom in recording - more headroom if you like - and then you dither to 16 
bit using a limiter so that you have the "best 16 bits" of the 24.
