Just guessing.
Perhaps your battery is down (I'm assuming it's not a laptop), and 
you have a broad band internet connection. You have in Mac OS 9 on 
Date & Time Control Panel network time sinchronization on and in MAC 
OSX Date & Time Sistem preference - off!
Perhaps?
