I can HIGHLY recommend Drag Thing. It lets you set up tabbed palettes
that contain your favorite applications/folders/files organized as you
want. I have three such bars at the bottom of my screen which show only
their tabs and slide up when the cursor is over them. One is for apps,
broken down into Video, Graphics, 3D, Audio, Internet, Text, etc. One
is for dynamically-mounted disks (CDs, network), and one is for my
usual partitions.

The Dock is reserved for running applications and a couple of key
program icons (such as Drag Thing). It makes life much simpler.
