Hmm... that's not even a bad idea :-).  Although I still have the 
feeling there must be something out there that does (approx) what I 
want -- the idea is just too obvious...  Thanks for the idea though 
-- if I don't find a ready-made solution I'll surely give it a try.

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
