There were a series of Deskstar IBM drives that were prone to early 
failure.

I had one of these - luckily was able to coax most of my files on to 
another drive before it went completely.

There are class action suits and lots of documentation on the web - 
Google for "IBM Deskstar failure" or something similar and I think you 
will come up with a list of the affected models in short order.

My advice would be to get a new drive immediately and if you can coax 
the Deskstar to life - rip what you can off it and trash it.
