The release of the new G5's has generated very little conversation around here this week. Wonder why? They didn't hit 3 GhZ and they didn't improve the case expansion situation, but Is everyone that disappointed? Anyway, for those who have been using G5's, I'm interested in opinions on RAM options. Getting 4 gig at Apple's prices is out of the question, but I'm curious as to why there is such a price discrepancy on G5 memory between other suppliers. I know Crucial has a great reputation, but is their RAM really worth nearly twice as much (for the 1 gig sticks) as what Memory To Go supplies? I tend to think if it works, it's fine, but any opinions on the advantages of one brand over another would be welcome. Also, does anybody know if the FireWire 800 and FireWire 400 ports are on separate buses? If not, then using any of our many older FW400 drives, which would still be handy for backup and other less intensive chores, would pull the whole bus down to 400 and negate any advantages of using FW800 drives. I couldn't find anything about this on the Apple site. One more thing: given the internal 2-drive limitation, are people blowing off the long-standing notion of keeping their system drives separate from their audio or sample-streaming drives? I doubt anyone needs a 160 gig system drive, and using the extra space on these fast drives for backup chores seems like quite a waste of resources. Again, any opinions or shared experiences would be appreciated. Thanks, Sean McCoy Oregon Sound Recording (soon to be the owner of a new G5---finally!)
