So, it really IS an alias (shortcut) that has now become evil and turned against its master ;-) Cool, kind of funny that such a bizarre situation can happen in OS X. However, the system is working perfectly in all other areas so I don't think I'll waste my working hours into troubleshooting it more. For now I leave it until the big clean-out that will come with upgrading to Tiger in a near future.
