SV: [L-OT] Logic and my Studio = confusion!

2001-06-21 by Per Boysen

Hi Mark,

Here's an idea: If you use only six of your Mackie busses for live midi synths you can have no 7 and 8 for "outboard fx stereo return" that now can be recorded into Logic by "live input". Then you can use your REV500 and MPX100 as well as all fx in Logic. Depending on the music and how you plan to treat the Mackie busses in Logic you may have to take early decisions on which midi modules to mix together in the Mackie on the same bus (or two for stereo).

But there's one thing I was wondering when reading about your set up. How do you handle latency with the live input objects? Do you correct this by pre delaying the midi tracks? That's the way I go when recording outboard synths as part of a bounce to disc, together with audio and loads of logic virtual instruments.

Once I experimented with an outboard Lexicon LXP-5, sending from logic busses over some of the AW8s analogue outputs and recording the reverb as live input objects (L+R). However I found it too much waste of time writing down settings, just as you said. I found I could get just about the same sound with the Logic platinverb together with EQ and compression. And much more control.

I have a bunch of outboard midi modules here but only two of them can produce sound that I cannot get with soft synths in Logic, That's an Oberheim Matrix-1000 and a Juno-106. If the music calls for sounds from one of these two I connect them directly to the soundcards two inputs, use Logics internal fx and compensate for latency by pre delaying the midi tracks.

Ämne: [L-OT] Logic and my Studio = confusion!

I am totally confused at how I should set up my studio. When I first
bought Loigic one year ago I had all my synth and mucs plugged into a
Mackie 32 channel/8 buss mixer. I also used outboard effects on aux
sends like the Yamaha REV500 and Lexicon MPX100. This way I recorded
all audio into Logic using outboard gear and only used Logic's
plugins AFTER the audio was recorded as a wave file. This worked ok,
but instead of writing down settings and wasting all of Logic's real
time effects, I re-wired my studio. This time I have all my synths
going into my Mackie 32:8, I have the 8 buss outs going to a Digi001
8 analog in, and using the Logic mixer and its effects all in real
time. The Digi001 works great for this as it is real time. I
enabled Software Monitoring and always have to "Record Enable" an
audio track in order for me to hear everything after it's passed
through Logic and back out the Digi001. I have the 001's 8 analog
outputs going into the Tape Returns of my Mackie mixer.

Hopefully everyone understood what I just explained. My question is
whether using this "software monitoring" method and all of Logic's
real time effects is a practical thing? Or is it better to use all
outboard gear off the Mackie and only use Logic's effects after
everything has been recorded into the computer?

  Thanks,

  Mark
