[LUG] [OT] some help with a big decision (mac vs pc)

[LUG] [OT] some help with a big decision (mac vs pc)

2001-08-16 by esatone@hotmail.com

I know this kind of argument comes up alot anyway I'm stuck between a
new p4 1.7 or a G4 867 and i've got to decide very soon...

I'm currently a pc user, originally i was goin to go for a new p4,
basically my reasons for possibly going mac are:

- I'm going to be doing multimedia in college next year so it'll be
used for video editing, graphics, music ect. and the college has
mainly macs...
- It would be an advantage to be able to take stuff home and work on
it on the same platform.
- new apple has me interested by all this hype, osX ect.

-anyway MAIN question: is the new 867 really faster/more powerful
than the p4 1.7 with rdram?
is it worth the difference in price? and what about osX vs new
windows 2000 ect.

btw i'm not too concerned with software changing platforms since if i
stay pc i wont be able to get the colleges video software so i'll
have to get that stuff myself and if i go mac i'll have to replace
the pc stuff i already have but i'll be able to get their video and
graphics software.
i'm really more planning for the future here so which ever route i
take from here i'll more than likely stick with.

i know this kind of thing is subjective and all that but anyway I'm
lost here and i've a day or so to decide.
any help would be greatly apppreciated

As a Mac user ..trying not to be partial...

Well honestly..maybe not..then again maybe the video-editing software
you would use
would take all the advantage of G4..so who knows? what about DP 800 ?
that would reaaly make videoediting fly.. plus you would have
SuperDrive and capability to burn your stuff on DVD to watch at home
? I know you can have this for PC too but the sofware isn't as good
as Apple's at the moment..
Of course 867 will also have SuperDrive...
I do think you are a target audience for DP 800 :-)
Let's put it this way: I have a friend who works as a salesperson of
professional audio/video stuff.
He had a customer who had a lot of trouble making his PC videoediting
stuff work (don't ask me, I have no idea what the guy used). My
friend just showed him how Apple works with FireWire and he was most
impressed how easily the thing worked. I vote Apple :-)

Cheers

Lets face it. The mac is the graphic designers machine.I know adobe
apps are optimised for it.
But hey i'm a Dual proc pc user, which is pretty good for adobe stuff
too.Id say mac dp would be better.
for audio though, its got to be a harder decision.I think pc,s are
getting the better performanc at present with logic, but if you ever
want to go pro tools and tdm then...
In N.Z.(where i live)the price difference is huge
