[OT][PRE's] Mic Preamps

Hi ALl I know this was asked only a few days ago but I dont remember seeing too many answers - what is a good all-round mic/instrument preamp/eq/compressor/expander/yadda yadda.... ??? Doesnt necessarily have to be valve or non-valve, just nice sounding ie. nice character rather than sterile, but clean with flexibility (asking too much???) Cost?
