[OT] RME news (multiface shipping date + ADI8-DD)

2001-09-22 by Joeri Vankeirsbilck

These mails were posted by Matthias Carstens at the RME forum:

Hello,

first of all: I want to deeply apologize for the long and windy road the
Multiface has taken so far. The whole HDSP and also ADI-8 DD development
was delayed in a way we would never thought it would be possible. After
the long delay until the ADI-8 Pro was finally shipping we thought
'let's take this as lesson and be much more careful with shipping dates
in the future'. We got another lesson...

At NAMM in January I personally demoed a working CardBus and Digiface,
and demonstrated it with Nuendo and extreme low latencies, running the
non-optimized business (!) notebook of our US distributor. We really
thought 'this was the last test, this stuff is ready to be shipped'.
Well, ever heard of Murphy? Two weeks later we found a notebook which
did not work. Then another, then another...you get the story. After
doing a lot more research and fixing some bugs, but also implementing a
lot workarounds for the *#!?:-( type of laptop, we decided to again stop
it and do some more field tests. Most of you know the result, found on
our website as Tech Infos. Finally, we were informing our customers
BEFORE the product was available, what problems they might have to face
with their notebook, and why. At least this is a very positive aspect of
the delay-issue.

Digiface finally shipped, but the Multiface was now delayed as much as
the Digiface was. Additionally we had reached summer, many companies
were in holidays (even we ourselves - delay...hmmm, not me...I have to
think about this again...). When trying to further improve the Multiface
we had to search for better components, which were not hard to get...but
not sooner than in 4 to 6 weeks...something like this can delay a
development extremely.

As most of you know I finally refused to give any date anymore, because
after all this unexpected mess I was sure it would come even more worse
as soon as I give another date. But now my hope is back. I have a fully
functional and tested Multiface in front of me, which will be taken into
production next week.

STOP! This does not mean that the Multiface will show up in your local
store in two weeks! Sorry. This does mean that everything needed for a
continous production run will be organized. Normally this means about 8
weeks until the first devices leave the factory.

Fortunately, thanks to the long delay (I never thought I would say this)
most of the time-critical components are already in our stock. Therefore
I expect the first Multifaces to ship in about two to three weeks.

Thank you all for your continued support. We are sure that you will like
it and that you will finally agree: it was worth the wait.

Regards
Matthias Carstens

Hello all,

I would like to take this opportunity (the Multiface mail) to introduce
the ADI-8 DD. You think you know it? Don't be too sure...it has changed
a lot within the last weeks. The ADI-8 DD is shipping since this week,
and ships world wide next week.

You can find all information about this Format and Sample Rate converter
on our website, the manual is also helpful to get a picture of all
included functions.

The ADI-8 DD has turned into a 16-channel 24 bit/96 kHz Dual Universal
Format Converter. We are very sure that this device is a MUST for every
semi- or profesional studio, as it allows so many functions which are
needed all the time, but poorly adressed by all the format and sample
rate convertes available.

We would also like to make you aware of some typical application
examples (in addition to the 12 mode list shown on the web). These are:

AES/EBU frontend for RME's digital I/O cards

TDIF frontend for RME's digital I/O cards

AES- and ADAT frontend for DTRS machines

Serves as 8-channel AES, TDIF and ADAT I/O for all digital mixing desks
with ADAT or TDIF port

Allows to operate 4 SPDIF or AES devices, no matter which sample rate or
clock reference those use, on every digital network

Note that you can use as many devices as you want (can afford [;-)] , to
convert an un-limited number of channels in sample-synchronicity.

Thank you
Matthias Carstens
