The Terrorists of Tomorrow
2001-10-11 by Kool Musick
I don't know about anyone else but I personally have found some of the mails that have come in over the last month or so unbelievably depressing. I leave you to formulate your own reasons. Regarding today's terrorists? These are surely of two kinds. (A) Those who have revealed themselves; and (B) those who have not. Those who have revealed themselves are pretty easy to spot. One just heads for the nearest site of mayhem and destruction. They generally have a dramatic way of announcing themselves. Such places are surely not unique. Look at any TV set. Lotta lotta places like that. As for the terrorists who have yet to announce themselves ... well ... maybe it's too already late to deal with them ... and then again ... maybe it is not. Dealing with them, though, can surely not be easy. If it were easy, after all, then surely someone would have dealt with them already and before they felt it necessary to reveal themselves? The matter of dealing with them is surely complicated by the fact that one person's terrorist is another person's freedom fighter? So ... perhaps ... in order to find a terrorist one needs only to find somewhere where people are feeling more than a touch hard done by? Who really knows?? Terrorists do not come from nowhere? Terrorists do not fight over nothing? Surely it is also wise and appropriate to wonder about tomorrow's terrorists? They are surely already being born? TODAY? I do find one thing very hard to understand. Why keep on and on arguing about bombs that were dropped over a generation ago? Why keep on and on arguing about wars that were fought yesterday? Why keep on and on arguing about conflagrations dating from well before my grandfather's generation? Why argue about them when all can surely agree that they should never have been fought? Is it not better to look around ... right now ... and do whatever needs to be done to stop tomorrow's wars from starting even before those who might fight them have even begun to think about fighting them? But then again ... I always was naive. Ignorance is a terrible thing. Ignorance is expensive. Ignorance costs lives. The worst ignorance of all surely comes from those who refuse to learn. The worst ignorance of all surely comes from those who refuse to listen. The worst ignorance of all surely comes from those whose heads are so full of information that there simply isn't room for any more. This is the 21st century. It is the Internet age. This world is simply too small for that kind of ignorance. I have a terrible suspicion that I know who tomorrow's terrorists are going to be. The way some of you are speaking ... I am very afraid that they will be my own children. I pray for the resolve and the wisdom to not make it so. Nothing I can do in the mean time except wish you all well and that you all have happy, prosperous and above all else peaceful lives.
