the trouble is, there are no targets in Afghanistan worth hitting with a
"smart bomb".
Sadly, bombing of the "carpet" variety is back in fashion.

I dont think the Taleban can be overthrown by air power alone, they are not
a conventional army, and I also think the Northern alliance cannot do it nor
should be allowed to take the Talibans place.

I'm afraid the price of overthrowing the Taliban will be thousands (or tens
of thousands) of young men from the US/UK sent home in body bags.

are we ready for another Vietnam??

...the right tool for the right job. There thousands of foreign Arab 
fighters aligned against the native Afgan northern alliance. These are 
not being used on the civilian refugees who have already fled. Maybe a 
little B-52 'arclight' or 'rolling thunder' (the terms used in Vietnam) 
will convince these foreign Arabs to go back home to their countries, and 
let the Afgan people have their country back!

America doesn't desire to posses Afganistan, the Arabs do - in particular 
the Saudis and Paks who are not happy with their own governments back home.
