kool, don't know how much help thisall will be, but: the danelectro baritones are cheaper than 400-600 USD; i think they're pretty cool. you can use a heavier gauge string than is 'standard', raise the action of the instrument slightly, and then de-tune the instrument more deeply into the bass-range; i don't know how far ye can go, though. (i have an old hofner 6-string bass, and a veillette/tokai-strat baritone 'bastard'). best, dt / s-c
