I don't know, it seems they are both critical components, 
The Avalon is a very nice pre, also check out the Amek - Channel 
in a Box, it is of Rupert Neve design, and based ont he 9098 
console strip, very good box, it runs about $2k, for my money, it 
beat the Avalon, I would go for an external converter, don't want to 
have all your money tied up in Focusrite gear per say, 
you could check out the new Apogee Mini Me pre and converter, 
based on the Trak 2 pre converter, except less than 1./2 the 
price, around $1200 or so.

Hello,

take a look at the Millennia Media HV-3D.
VERY Good discrete Class A Pre-Amp.
No noise, no unwanted colour, .... so beautyfull!!!!!

take a look in the reference list- this piece is really hi-end!!!!!
