I use Etymotics ER4S and love it. It is especially good at isolating
external noise. Very detailed and crisp mid / high. Firm bass.

I LOVE my Sennheiser HD 580s. So comfortable and perfect for home.
Especially if you need to wear them for prolonged periods of time (due
to noise-sensitive neighbors) and not just for close temporary close
monitoring.

Headphones are very personal things and some people get very stressed
when
talking (arguing) about them. Me? I use Sennheiser HD250s, and they are
great. I
have had them for twelve years and apart from the foam pads rotting,
they still sound
and work great.

Now does anyone wanna God damn argue with that!!!? :-)

Not so good if you are trying to isolate the outside world, but I find the
Sennheiser HD600's are just great. The only cans I can comfortably mix on!!

Only demoed those once but they were excellent.
Last year some time, on the LUG, there was a similar thread
and the recommended phones that came up again & again were:

AKG 240
Stax Lambda
Sennheiser 600
Beyer 990
Sony 7506

I've deleted the mail but if the original enquirer was UK based and
on a tight budget, I have to tell him to check out the Sennheiser 590
- a slight drop in performance but way cheaper than the 600's. I just
got a pair this week for \ufffd70 from http://www.empiredirect.co.uk

Like Matt says about his 600's, they're the first phones I've
used that I can trust for mixing with - not that one would do this
exclusively on cans, of course, but I don't think I could monitor
anything I do now without frequent checking on these phones.
Very revealing and neutral sounding.

Only thing I hate about Sennheiser's are the fragile bloody leads
they ship 'em with.
