this is all fine and good for people who are making music that sounds 
fine without being recorded.  I think you're leaving out the many 
bands, songs, and albums for which the recording tools are in essence 
part of the instrumentation.

there are many examples - beatles, NIN, radiohead, much of 
contemporary r& b.   With lot of this stuff you have to figure out 
how to play it live after the fact...

so, it depends on what kind of music your making the extent to which 
knowing the programs is necessary.  I think it's ridiculous to 
pretend that the technology and recording in general doesn't 
sometimes get in the way of making music, but also silly to not see 
the potential to add to the music that the technology brings.
