OT- MOTU MTPAV (USB-based) and dual processors
2002-07-26 by efiebke
Hello: I upgraded my computer system by adding a second processor (Pentium III 733mgh). At first, the USB-based MTPAV did not respond when I attempted to activate it's configuration software (MTPAVCON). The error message said that the device did not give enough information and offered me a choice to try again or abort (in so many words). At the time, there were several devices attached to the USB ports of my computer. The MTPAV has its own dedicated USB port. Attached to the second port was a USB hub with two different USB-based dongles for software programs (Steinberg's SX and Emagic's LAWP 5.13 programs), USB-based network device for a cable modem and a USB-based CD burner. In an attempt to "lighten" the USB devices, I disconnected/disengaged the the USB-based network device and CD- burner. Interestingly, after I did this, I was then able to get into the MTPAVCON program. Unfortunately, when I tried to sequence music in either the SX program or the LAWP program, the midi information seemed corrupted. Chords would have missing notes and other notes would just continue to sound (remain sustained) despite not pressing on the sustain pedal. This left me with no other choice but to take out the second processor. Now all is functioning normally. Here's my system: Dell Precision Workstation 420 Pentium III 733 MGh (133Frontside Bus; 256 K Full Speed Cache) 512 MB RAM (PC600, 300 MHZ) - 4X128 Rambus Memory Matrox G400 Video Card 10 GB Hard Drive, IDE (ATA-66/100) 7.2 RPM 20 GB Hard Drive, IDE (ATA-66/100) 7.2 RPM Plextor CD-Burner 12/10/32S (external) Windows XP Professional MOTU 2408 mkII MOTU MTPAV (USB-based) Steinberg's Wavelab Emagic's LAWP 3.15 The following items are disengaged on the computer (as part of my normal day to day set up): 1) The modem is off 2) The network card is off 3) The internal sound board is off Here are my questions: 1) Does the MTPAV (USB-based) function with dual processors? 2) If so, what type of configuration is needed within the computer's hardware and software (including drivers) to promote a functioning MTPAV? Know that the set-up with just one processor works/functions dependably. However, I would like to use two processors on this now aging computer to help increase performance. Thank you for your time.
