This whole Jeremy moderation thing
2002-10-25 by Tony Perretta
I joined the L-OT list only a few days ago. By some strange coincidence it gratingly coincided with this 'edifying' debate on the nature of censorship. An oft used expression comes to mind - A little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing. If I might quote from my post from a few days ago to the Logic-Admin list when answering Jeremy's and Joeri's call for input : "For myself I have extremely limited interest in largely uninformed musician types sharing their ... uh ... "opinions" other than it can sometimes reveal more about a person's true identity." Well this has certainly been the case. It seems that there are a few net geek types intent on soap-box posturing and/or picking a fight. Whilst there is nothing wrong with being a net geek (and I am not sure that I am _not_ one) those that pick fights are tiresome. I would also include myself in the set of "largely uninformed musician types". Many listees want a free list which I think is very reasonable. Thus Jeremy, quite sensibly IMO, allowed a poll to decide the nature of the list. A one person-one vote system (ie the very embodiment of free democracy so much desired it seems) and subsequently there have been complaints about this. And finally the school playground mocking of such a system by teddybut - of anything I have seen here over the past few days this is the biggest 'affront to the spirit of democracy' - an angle some of you have played as your joker card. Orren's post of today was totally on the money in every way and I align myself with his position. If people don't like this list they can fuck off and start their own. An extremely simple solution that I would think is worth encouraging. Finally when all/most posts on a mailing list are about the list itself this soon becomes tiresome. FWIW I don't have an opinion as to whether the list should or should not be limited in subject scope. Once this scope has been decided people should respectfully abide by it. I for one would much rather engage in topics other than the topic of topics ... er ... I think u know what I am trying to say. Tony Perretta
