Funny, Colin, up until recently I was using a 414 B-ULS mostly for
vocals, preferring it to the other large diaphragm mics I have - TLM
170 and AT 4050. I was lucky to pick up a 2nd hand Brauner VM 1 last
summer, and that is now mostly my first choice .....
Another thing is not to always just set the mic to cardioid. At least
half of the vocal recordings I did with the 414 where made using the
Omni pattern - I found it smoother and more open, and proximity
effect is of course no longer an issue, whether that is good or bad
is an other issue....it can even be worthwhile placing drapes or
goboes around the singer, if the room acoustic causes problems with
the omni pattern ....
just my 2 cents :-)
