It also depends on which one. There are about 5 or 6 different 414's and 
they have different sounds. Just avoid the p48 or B-ULS ones whh have that 
harsh midrange which maybe what the poster means by 'skinny'.

Funny, Colin, up until recently I was using  a 414 B-ULS mostly for 
vocals, preferring it to the other large diaphragm mics I have - TLM 
170 and AT 4050. I was lucky to pick up a 2nd hand Brauner VM 1 last 
summer, and that is now mostly my first choice .....

Another thing is not to always just set the mic to cardioid. At least 
half of the vocal recordings I did with the 414 where made using the 
Omni pattern - I found it smoother and more open, and proximity 
effect is of course no longer an issue, whether that is good or bad 
is an other issue....it can even be worthwhile placing drapes or 
goboes around the singer, if the room acoustic causes problems with 
the omni pattern ....
