I remembered a clipping that I took from a DAW-Mac list post on CD-ROM
storage and dug it out. Here it is - sorry I can't attribute to an
individual:

'...a friend of mine had about 50 regular CD's stored in one of those
wallets. These have developed a pattern on the bottom of them that
is making them unreadable. What appears to have happened is that the Vinyl
in the wallets is not totally cured when the inserts are made.  The aromatic
hydrocarbons dissolve the face of the CD.

On a related note, I had a similar system for storing floppies. The printing
on the gate on 3M brand floppies welded  to the vinyl case requiring a knife
to loosen them. 

As to CDR's I am pretty sure that if you lose the backing, that you have
pretty much lost the dye layer...'

I haven't had any problems yet personally, but I do remember that I took the
clipping to remind myself to get a better storage system for my backups than
the wallets I currently use! D'oh!
