Glen, Actually, not a bad shot. I have some VB code that uses a driver in Windows XP to change the port from SPP to EPP. The basis for the command string is "Parallel Port Complete by Jan Axelson. I have lost your email address, contact me off list and I'll send you the code. It's only a very few lines. You could just write a small utility that made the change. I don't know how to change it back but that shouldn't be difficult to figure out.
