I suspect it would be easier to do the USB as an add on because of the PC driver support for the FTDI products. It'll have to do CAN in real time, but it'll only need the USB when the mechanicals are stopped, so I thought on-chip CAN was the better trade off. As to the CAN baud rate / protocol issues; I need 3 bytes of data from a sensor about 10 feet away in a very noisy enviroment about every 5mS.
