Here's hoping this gets through. Yahoo shuts down my access every time
they (yahoo) sends a message containing malware. My server bounces it and
Yahoo decides the e-mail address is invalid. Mutter.

Several things contribute.
Spare time, The site is already paid for anyway and this doesn't
add significantly to its load.
Development for other projects, some of the code developed for
other projects migrates it's way in or vice versa it provides a way to
develop supporting code.
Contributions. Not all of the code is mine. In fact the last
major revision to the site was in part to provide a way to make others
contributions available more quickly w/o my own review acting as a
bottleneck. More contributions welcome, especially if anyone want to
contribute headers for other variants :)
Mostly I develop on a contract/consulting basis. Some of the work is GNU
but some in other compilers. I'm leaning towards GNU more and more not
because of purchase cost but because commercial compilers have become
increasing encumbered with copy protection schemes.

Mostly on a contract/consultant basis. I started out in Physics and
migrated from lab equipment to embedded work. A lab book is still an
important tool :) My current major project involves robotics using Visual
Basic (ugh ;) and Rapid (double ugh). Visual Basic has its advantages but
I can't say I like the language.
I can let you know what other tools I use but I'll let you think about what
questions you want to ask first.
Others on this forum will have different backgrounds and experiences

It depends on the project. If there are good detailed specs then yes I sit
down and develop a plan. If the project is small enough a quick sketch in
the lab book is sufficient. A large project w/o specs first requires some
sort of attempt to determine its scope.

Don't limit it just to me, although you are welcome to use the contact
section on the web site if you want to contact me off forum. There's a lot
of experience in this forum.
