  Have you tried entering the following (or putting it in your
gdb.ini/.gdbinit file)?

# Increase the packet size to improve JTAG speeds.
set remote memory-write-packet-size 1024
set remote memory-write-packet-size fixed
set remote memory-read-packet-size 1024
set remote memory-read-packet-size fixed

Speeds thing up quite a bit for me.
