The SPI race condition is explained in the errata sheets, the timer issues 
is not officially documented in an errata yet but an explanation is 
contained in a file in the files section

The basic problem in both cases is the same.  If a register is read at the 
same time as the underlying HW attempts to update it the update gets 'lost'
