There is no other alternative...AFAIK

I disagree strongly... I have written my own FAT16 driver which I used prior
to using the PRLLC source code solution and I've never toasted the files so
badly that scandisk couldn't save them, and thinking about the many
megabytes I have written to both secure digital and compact flash cards I
think it's a nice statistic.
