PCs are cheap, common found in all places and are easy to program and expand. PC programs for programming devices are already used (and - more important - tested) in development environments and for production environment all types of IO cards are available that will hook your PC solution into a production line and here is also no problem with fitting a PC into any networked solution. In larger production environments the ease of adaptation and expandability of progamming and test equipment is important. This can all be realized fairly easy on a PC. I've used software like LabView, together with some home brew solutions for these kind of situations. Last time I used specific hardware solutions was when I had to reprogram about 200 pieces of 8751 devices (good old 8051 with UV erasable EPROM). These had to be taken out of their end-user equipment, swapped by new SW version and meanwhile re-program the devices just taken out. This was about 15 years ago when we just had one fairly expensive programmer in our development lab... There may be good reasons for not using a PC (given last week where a device had to be programmed while hanging uot somewhere above the ground). In that case look for a Windows CE PDA with serial port. Rob
