Soundcard + Virtual COM Port: Which Chip(s) to use?

Soundcard + Virtual COM Port: Which Chip(s) to use?

2006-02-25 by kms34655

I am a newbie to USB.

I want to develop a device that is 1) a soundcard and 2) a virtual
COM port. I want to be able to plug this device into a computer USB
port and have it operate as both a sound card and a COM port.

I've been looking at all the different chips available for USB and
I'm not sure of the best approach. I was hoping that there might be
someone out there with a broad knowledge of the available hardware
along with the USB experience that could suggest what to use to
create this product. For example: can the FTDI FT2232 interface to a
sound chip using a serial interface (SPI, etc...) via its MPSSE
interface? I'm looking at purchasing the Keil MCB2140 evaluation
board as it looks like the Phillips LPC2141 microcontroller can
handle both functions in one chip.

Are there any other USB devices out there that can perform these two
functions?

Thanks,

Kevin

Kevin,

AFAIK, there are two "standard" USB-to-UART bridges:
SiLabs' CP210x and FTDI's FT232R/FT245R.

The main differences are:
1. SiLabs have more mA on 3.3V regulator.
2. FTDI have an oscillator.
3. FTDI have no-QFN package option.
4. FTDI have more parallel I/O.

Both provides TTL-level Serial and Parallel interface.
Both works excellent.

Regards,

Aryeh

so you can add a third to this list, because there is one from Maxim
that let you add USB to a microcontroller by an SPI port :
http://www.maxim-ic.com/quick_view2.cfm/qv_pk/4751

I never use it, just find this info a moment ago and keep it in my
favorites, but maybe it could be another alternative..

there are also dedicated sound chips that have USB interface. they
have been created to make USB "souncards". maybe some of them can
also interface to a microcontroller.
(I see a design recently with a PCM2902 from Texas Instruments. it's
a standalone chip, but maybe one of is brothers can communicate with
a microcontroller).

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
