Both 8 bit and 16bit access in EXT Memory

Hello, I have an LPC2212 connected via 16 bit ext. memory bus to a 16 bit SRAM. The UBLS and LBLS are connected. Is it possible to access a byte at a time with this setup, or is it restricted to 16 bits? Thanks, Tony
