Using P1.0 and P1.1 on 2214 as GPIO

Is is possible to use P1.0 and P1.1 as GPIO on the 2214? I've tried setting PINSEL2 to 4 (all GPIO except JTAG) but am unable to read the state of these pins or to toggle these pins in output mode.
