that doesnt use too much NV memeory or RAM on the microcontroller, is
well priced and easily driven?

maybe you should look at phone lcd from Nokia for exemple. like
the "standard" 3310 (there are many infos on it on the web). that a
simple B&W lcd with SPI interface. for a bigger one in color, maybe
the 6100 (see here for exemple : http://www.apetech.de/article.php?
artId=3&nnId=12).

Does anyone now of a source of technical information (in English) for
these types of devices? Specifications, interface details, both
software and hardware, etc.

Thanks,

Dave S.

A good place to start is probably:

http://forum.lcdinfo.com/viewtopic.php?t=586

It does look a good item to use, built in controller, proper LCD,
decent resolution and most importantly, cheap!

Maybe you could download the LCD controller datasheet for
more information:

For Nokia 3310:

First stop is your local mobile phone repair shop. They should have a
selection of screens for various models, and you should be able to
select an appropriate one (assuming you can physically see the chip).

Second option is Ebay. There are hundreds of replacement LCDs for
sale, I'm sure at least one of them would be able to sell you an
appropriate one.
