Well I can rename 1.5.11 to 1.6RC1 if that makes you happy, but it will
still be the same software.

In fact 1.5.11 will turn into 1.6 if we find no bugs in it.

Yes, it will be better to modify the existing rc-linux.sh so that it
accomodates more Linux flavors.

I beleive this was fixed in recent releases.

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
