libmilter and libpthread problem building on Redhat ES

libmilter and libpthread problem building on Redhat ES

2007-01-25 by jcleone2

I'm trying to build milter-greylist-3.0 on a Redhat ES distribution
system.

I'm having problems getting through the ./configure process.

I get stopped here:
checking for pthread_create in -lpthread... no
checking for pthread_create in -lc_r... no
checking for pthread_create in -lpthreads -lpthread... no
Required libpthread not found. Use --with-libpthread

I use this command line

./configure
--with-libmilter=/usr/src/redhat/SOURCES/sendmail-8.12.10/obj.Linux.2.4.21-4.ELsmp.i686/libmilter/libmilter.a

--with-libpthread=/usr/lib/libpthread.a

The configure script failet at

configure:5582: result: no
configure:5587: checking for pthread_create in -lpthreads -lpthread
configure:5617: gcc -o conftest -g -O2 -Wall
-I/usr/src/redhat/SOURCES/sendmail-8.12.10/obj.Linux.2.4.21-4.ELsmp.i686/libmilter/libmilter.a/include
-I/usr/lib/libpthread.a/include
-L/usr/src/redhat/SOURCES/sendmail-8.12.10/obj.Linux.2.4.21-4.ELsmp.i686/libmilter/libmilter.a/lib
-Wl,--rpath=/usr/src/redhat/SOURCES/sendmail-8.12.10/obj.Linux.2.4.21-4.ELsmp.i686/libmilter/libmilter.a/lib
-L/usr/lib/libpthread.a/lib -Wl,--rpath=/usr/lib/libpthread.a/lib
conftest.c -lpthreads -lpthread >&5
/usr/src/redhat/SOURCES/sendmail-8.12.10/obj.Linux.2.4.21-4.ELsmp.i686/libmilter/libmilter.a/include:
Not a directory
/usr/lib/libpthread.a/include: Not a directory
configure:5623: $? = 1

Thanks a lot if someone have an idea, i am a little confused with this
problem.

Regards.

What happens when you do it without a --with-libpthread argument?

Chances are you have your libpthread library and headers in places
that the compiler already searches, so it should work.

Thanks a lot for your help,

I tried to execute the configure script without --with-libpthread
(and/or) without --with-libmilter.
The system doesn't found the librairies and ask me to use these
parameters.

It's strange that the scrip add "/include/" after the path that i
mentionned.

/usr/src/redhat/SOURCES/sendmail-8.12.10/obj.Linux.2.4.21-4.ELsmp.i686/libmilter\
/libmilter.a/include: Not a directory

/usr/lib/libpthread.a/include: Not a directory

It seems to be the origine of the problem but i'm really not sure.

Regards.

Because the "--with-lib<whatever>" argument is supposed to point to
the *directory* where the libraries and includes are located. In
your case it seems to be "/usr/src/redhat/SOURCES/sendmail-8.12.10/obj.Linux.2.4.21-4.ELsmp.i686/libmilter".

	Kind regards

You used --with-libpthread=/usr/lib/libpthread.a
You should have used --with-libpthread=/usr

But /usr is always looked up, so you should have not used
--with-libpthread at all.

Thanks a lots for all the help you gave to me since my first post.
In spite of these the problem is remained.
May be i have forgotten something.

In fact my project is too use milter greylist with sendmail-8.12.10.

1. First i have downloaded milter-greylist-3.0
There are some prerequisites to install milter-greylist :

Build dependencies:
- flex (AT&T lex cannot build milter-greylist sources)
- yacc or bison
- libmilter (comes with Sendmail)
- Any POSIX threads library (Provided by libc on some systems)

Flex, bison are already installed.
I hope that it’s the same for the POSIX threads library because there
is a file called libpthread.a on my system, il don’t knox if it’s
sufficient.

It seems that only the libmilter is missing.

2. So I have downloaded the sendmail-8.12 .10-1.src package ant
install it.
With this package there are the sources of libmilter.
I run the Build script and libmilter.a was generated.

3. Now i run the configure script of milter-greylist again and obtain
the errors messages that i mentioned in the first post.

Is there something missing in this install procedure ?
Did i forget something ?

Thanks by advance.

Regards.

You do not want to use 81210. Its insecure. RHES has a patch for sendmail
already, which is _not_ 81210. You need to be running RH most recent
sendmail, or 81211. You can build 81211 pretty easily since RH provides the
mcs needed to make it. What release of RHES are you running.

It's much easier to install sendmail-devel package (yum install sendmail-devel
for example).

Note he only wants libmilter.
