Recipient verification via SMTP to avoid backscattering (gateway <--> internal server)

Recipient verification via SMTP to avoid backscattering (gateway <--> internal server)

2010-02-19 by Jorge GarcĂa

Hello,

We have been using milter-greylist for more than two years with great
success. We are very happy with it, thank you very much!

Now we are trying prevent our e-mail gateways from backscatterring
(accept messages first but bounce them with "user unknown" later).

We like the solution of Scam-backscatter milter [1], where the e-mail
gateway queries for the address to the internal servers during the SMTP
dialog. This approach is useful for us because we can't use ldap for all
our subdomains.

Is there any way to configure this kind of verifications with
milter-greylist?

Thank you,
Jorge

Yes, I do validate incoming mail recipients against our LDAP directory.
In fact, I pull per-recipients filtering settings from LDAP, and I
reject if there are no matches.

I use ldapcheck clause, but you can use a webservice with urlcheck
if you prefer that.
