I'm not sure I agree with this. I was quite good at thinking up patches for 
modulars in the early eighties. Then the university I was attending bought a 
DX-7 in about 85 (does that sound right?) and I spent my lab time for several 
weeks trying to figure it out (since it was obviously the new improved 
"synthesis" that would leave all others ground in the dust). I never had a 
real handle on it and soon went back to using the older Synclavier. It was a 
few years later that I realized my more explorative sonic exploits would be 
in the analog domain. At that time I thought I was just being lazy (can't 
teach an old dog new tricks), or nostalgic -- of course maybe that's true.

That is probably true, but again, in the good old days, there were really 
only the two main types of "synthesis (additive and subtractive).
