I have tried different arrangements with my mixers, and I actually quite like a through-gain of 1 with the pots maxed out. Somehow it seems to make perfect sense. Set the control to 10 and get a gain of 1, set a control for 2 and get a gain of 0.2. For log pots... oh crikey, perceived loudness???. Maybe you do need two types of mixer. Analogue Systems have two types... same PCB but different pots. AND... I prefer an extra jack output for the bias output. You can squeeze it next to the switch.
