Linear FM is what the DX-7, TR-808 and other synths use to create different sounds out of VCOs. Instead of the usual 1V/Oct response, the response is like 1000Hz/Volt. The AC/DC switch also adds different timbres, because if you modulate with a waveform with a non-zero DC value (like a pulse or saw), AC coupling will sound different than DC coupling.
