[motm] BC3 almost without using Midi & Flute

2001-08-04 by elhardt@aol.com

I was ever so slighty able to use the Yamaha BC3 breath controller with the
MOTM without using Midi, after I connected a stack of cable
adapters/converters and some aligator clips, but unfortunately I couldn't get
enough range out of it to do anymore than allow me to alter LFO speed a
slight amount. I measured oddball voltages like +5 and -8 going into the
breath controller. Blowing into the thing caused a voltage to drop, but
that's where it gets confusing. There was a change in voltage on both the
tip and the ring of the connector. The one with the biggest change which is
what I thought I should use, didn't like it when I connected the MOTM to it.
I had to use the other one. It looks like it needs some amplification to use
it this way. If anybody has done this let us know. Or if anybody knows of a
breath controller that doesn't need Midi, please also let us know.

As a result, a somewhat flute like sound I patched up to use the BC3 without
Midi, ended up not using the breath controller for anything more than a very
slight change in tremelo rate. But since I twice had a discussion with a
Synth.com owner in the past about synthesizing flutes, I put it up for him
anyway. It's at the link below. Again, it sounds muffled and horrible
through my computer speakers. It needs headphones or bright clear speakers
to the point where you will be annoyed by the loud buzzing sound that got
introduced from somewhere. Note, it's played in realtime on a split keyboard
with Piano on the lower half and MOTM on the upper half.
