It takes two things to 'play scales' with a VC delay line - one is sufficiently short delay time capability, but equally important is the delay time resolution. I haven't been able to play with this stuff myself, but I wouldn't be surprised if you had to vary the delay time in sub-millisecond increments between notes. Good luck with your experiment!
