I did it the same way.  The sewing needle is required for two reasons.  
First to locate the holes, since you cannot see them from the front with 
the velvet covering the board.  Push the needle through from the back, 
making two holes, and then fit the LED from the front with a bit of 
probing.  Solder one lead.  A needle is sharp enough to separate the 
fabric easily.  The LED leads cannot pierce the velvet without shredding 
it up a little, which is to be avoided.

As for the LED part numbers and current resistors I ended up using, I 
noticed I don't have this information on my website.  I will add it.
