Well, I did buy all the Xilinx tools ($2500!) and 'IP' to do the project. I also 
bought Philips ARM tools if I use
that as the front end (the Xilinx toolset includes it's own 32-bit RISC 
processor called a MicroBlaze). The
Xilinx Spartan 3E chips are coming down in price in 2006 so that by fall, I can 
get started. I *already have*
front panels :)
