Another option is to purchase a cheap drum machine such as a Korg DDD-1 which has trigger outputs; then you could fire them via MIDI or a pad on the drum machine. You could track down a MIDI-trigger interface. I don't know how much they cost or the models off the top of my head.--maybe someone else here does, otherwise try the Analogue Heaven archives (http://www.midiwall.com/aharchives). The thing about the Korg DDD-1 is that they're cheap (people are trying to sell them for too much on eBay but no one seems to be biting for more than around $60), they have two trigger outputs which can be switched from positive trigger mode to short-to-ground mode, and they're not at all bad for digital drum machines (editable sounds, optional sampling board).
